KNOWING THE UNKNOWN

The mobile photographic project of Knowing the Unknown revolved around the idea of capturing widely-popular tourist attractions around the Melbourne CBD, and reflecting an idea of unrecognition of the location due to use of long exposure and a somewhat harsh black and white editing style – removing those elements of distinguishability of texture, colour, and form – allowing for a greater degree of exploration and investigation from both the viewer and myself into locations which we pass by day in and day out.

Influenced by the works of Megan Kennedy, which reminded me of the Night Mode on the iPhone Camera App, but with her work it focuses on the use of long exposure on natural landscapes, and from there intrigued me into shaping this idea about something I was already interested in which was architecture. Questioning the possibilities of results and the wide range of experimentation of photography that can be produced on a mobile device – and rarely having used my phone for such purposes also seemed interesting. Evolving the project from simply taking a basic photo of tourist destinations, the location scouting across the What’s On - City of Melbourne website, piqued an interest in seeing some of these locations for the first time, as I’m not from the city. From the State Library, to Melbourne Central, and St. Paul’s Cathedral and the Royal Exhibition Building, each has their own defining features.
